KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that they arrested the girl on Tuesday after the 63-year-old was found dead in her Fairbreeze home on Monday.

At the time, police told Newswatch that the woman's grandchild claimed that a man wielding a hammer attacked her granny in the house.

However, on Wednesday, police say the child's statement did not add up.

The woman's neighbour said she had suffered a stroke not so long ago and has not been very mobile since.

She says they had been living across from each other for almost 20 years and did not hear anything on the morning of the murder.

"We went outside and saw a lot of police vehicles by the person's house, and we didn't know what happened. So, I quickly ran across as well to see what happened because we are neighbours and there we saw the policeman was taking statements from everybody. Everybody was in shock, they were screaming and crying," she said.

She has told Newswatch that the woman was a humble person who loved her grandchildren.

"She was a fun-loving person. She'll always be waving at you whenever you re walking past or driving past. You'll see her taking the grandchildren for a short walk on the road. She was an absolutely lovely person. We couldn't sleep or think. This is absolutely shocking for somebody to do something of the sort," she said.
