Murder probe uncovered PhD fraud syndicate at UniZulu
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande says investigations into the death of a University of Zululand professor have helped uncover a fraudulent PhD syndicate operating at the institution.

Oscar Mthiyane and Selby Nkuna received life sentences in Pietermaritzburg last week, for shooting the 53-year-old Arts Dean in his car in 2018.
Professor Gregory Kamwendo had stamped out a fraudulent skeem that saw courses and certificates being awarded illegally.

Some of those involved were staff members.
Higher Education spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said: "Minister Nzimande says that the death of Professor Kamwendo was a double murder as it took the life of Prof Kamwendo at the height of his career.
"But also this killing exposed corruption and self-interest which seek to destroy the image and credibility of not only of UniZulu but of the higher education system as a whole."
