Werner de Jager was back at the local court today for bail application.

His wife and mother of his children Liezel de Jager was found dead at her home almost three years ago.

According to the charge sheet two months prior to his wife's murder her will was changed making him sole beneficiary.

De Jager has allegedly attempted to cash out some policies.

The court has heard that in light of the new evidence the charge will now be premeditated murder.

The State says it will also oppose bail.

Civil rights group Action Society's Ian Cameron says it's shocking to hear of the additional charges.

"So very concerning and I think it would be a major mistake for the state to simply let him go."

Cameron says they want bail denied for a few reasons.

"It’s clear to us that Mr De Jager is likely a flight risk. He doesn't have a solid work address at the moment. He also doesn't have a proper residential address and there are many other questions that we may have.

"Not only that I think he is a potential risk to family and to other members of the public, and on top of that I really believe an example should be made of him."
