Megan Prins stands accused of smothering 7-year-old Sloane to death in an Umhlanga bed and breakfast, north of Durban in June.

She handed herself over to police and has been in custody since.

Prins was admitted to Fort Napier Hospital for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation in late August and launched a formal application for bail - which the State opposed - in the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Magistrate Mahomed Motala described this as 'a most unusual case'.

He said one one had to go deeper, to establish a 'why' and that that 'why' was explained in affidavits handed up by Prins and her brother, Adrian, detailing her allegedly abusive relationship with her child's father and her history of mental illness.

Motala said it was important that Prins was of sound mind while she prepared for her trial and that the place for her to do so would be at home with her family.

She was granted R3 000 bail.

She is not to communicate with any State witnesses and has to report twice weekly to her local police station until the matter is finalised.

She is due back in the dock next month.
