Mtubatuba plantation to be cleared to curb crime
Updated | By Mamelisa Ngcongo
A 200-hectare plantation in the Nordale suburb of Mtubatuba is set to be cleared in an effort to curb crime.
The municipality claims the plantation has no economic value, and has become a haven for criminals who hide out between the trees.
Ward 4 Councillor Ntokozo Mthimkhulu says one of the issues is the lack of a fence between the plantation and the residents’ homes.
"There was a lot of crime which was taking place, they would hide in the forest and break into homes and they will know when there is no one at home."
Mthimkhulu says three contractors have been appointed for the deforestation process.

He says the land will be used for economic development.
"The land would benefit the community and the municipally, but one thing for sure that section of the forest is already for residential areas and the municipality will see how that area will be developed."
