Newlands East residents unhappy with high water bills
Updated | By Tamasha Khanyi
A councillor in Newlands East, north of Durban, says exorbitant water bills can't be afforded by a community facing high unemployment.
On Wednesday, Ward 11 councillor Allan Peterson received a memorandum from residents protesting against utility charges.
They've criticised eThekwini's decision to backtrack on the provision of free basic water and introduce retroactive charges.
"From December when all the members received this R4000 to R5 000 extra. They are finding that it is added onto bills of estimation, bills where members of the community cannot meet the basic requirement of paying the municipality and it is just built up to a stage where I have on a daily basis I have members of the community asking me for assistance."

Residents have given the municipality two weeks to respond to their demands.
