Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Residents of Msunduzi Local Municipality will have to dig deeper into their pockets for basic services following the approval of new tariff hikes.
A full council adopted a 3,08% electricity hike as well as 15% increase for water supply.
There were many objections by residents as well as local business to the hikes.

The municipality's Thobeka Mafumbatha says the tariff hikes were necessary if the municipality is to continue providing essential services to its residents.
"It will depend on the fiscus that we receive from ratepayers which allows us to ensure that we give as much service as we can to our people. As the municipality, we believe this will in turn, help with the improvement of people's lives. We are actually busy working on that," she said.
Property rates, refuse and sanitation have also gone up by 6.4%.
