Msunduzi says cheap politics at play over mayoral vehicle purchase
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Msunduzi's municipal manager has accused opposition parties of cheap politicking in order to create an outcry around the purchase of the mayor's new official vehicle.
This comes as both the mayor's and speaker's vehicles are said to be out of warranty, with their repairs and maintenance running up a hefty bill.

Municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba says when the matter was brought before Exco, there was a huge outcry against the vehicles costing more than R700 000 each, as per cost containment regulation.
Mapholoba says opposition members had conveniently chosen to disregard the second part of the regulation, which states that a vehicle can be purchased at a value of 70% of the mayor's total annual remuneration package.

"Which means you calculate the total package of the mayor and then you take 70 percent of that.
"If you take the mayor's salary, you will find that 70 percent of that goes to R918 000 to we are still going to procurement processes and see what we get in the market."
