Mpophomeni electricity protest enters third day

Protest action flared up for the third day outside Howick on Tuesday, with demonstrators again blocking the R617 and Mandela Highway.

Residents from the Mpophomeni township are demanding their electricity supply be restored - after a transformer blew last week.
Umngeni Municipality says this was because of overloading due to illegal connections.
It says it'll repair the transformer and restore the power supply after it conducts a house-to-house audit.

Zinhle Mali, who's with the Road Traffic Management Cooperation, says protesters this morning set tyres alight on the affected routes.
"We urge motorists to use the N70n that's the Edendale Road via Boston to enter Mpophomeni."
