Movember: Grow a mo, save a bro

Movember: Grow a mo, save a bro

November has arrived, which means that men around the world will be carefully cultivating their facial follicles - all in the name of 'Movember.' But the campaign is about much more than proving one's moustache-growing capabilities; its main focus is to raise awareness about men's health issues.

Movember - a portmanteau of "moustache" and "November" - is an annual moustache-growing campaign that's celebrated globally.

During the month of November, millions of men sprout moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

In South Africa, tens of thousands of men are diagnosed with these diseases annually, yet there is still a stigma around male-related illnesses.

The Movember campaign aims to change all that - by creating awareness of these conditions, without fear of judgment.

In its 12th year, the Movember campaign has now become a global movement, with the 'mo' becoming the non-official ribbon for men's health.

Since 2003, more than R6.6 billion has been raised globally - through pledges from more than 5-million 'Mo Bros' who have participated in this initiative.

The premise is simple: men register on the Movember site (https://za.movember.com/) to raise funds for the campaign. They start the campaign fresh-faced on November 1, and then pledge to grow and groom a moustache for the entire month of November.

Women ('Mo Sisters') can also get involved - by signing-up and pledging funds to the campaign.
