Motorists warned of wet conditions during end of holiday rush
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
The N3 Toll Concession is urging motorists to travel carefully this weekend, especially if they are making the trip back to Gauteng after spending the school holiday on the coast.
The concession says some holidaymakers have already begun heading home but they are expecting traffic volumes leaving KwaZulu-Natal to peak on Sunday afternoon.
The concession's Con Roux says wet driving conditions are forecast along the N3 this weekend.
Roux's been speaking to Newswatch following a spate of fatal accidents on the freeway in the past week.
He says 13 people have been killed in multiple crashes on the N3 toll route since the beginning of October.
"We are extremely concerned about the number of crashes that have occurred. Some of those have been high profile crashes in the Van Reenens Pass area and in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands like Balgowan and Nottingham Road. A number of those crashes have been on wet roads. With a lot of rain forecast for this weekend, we have a huge concern that there may be more crashes," he said.

Meanwhile, Roux says they're concerned about driver behaviour in recent months.
He says 122 people were killed on the N3 between Cedara in KZN and Heidelberg in Gauteng between January and September this year.
That is already an increase of 11 fatalities compared to the 111 people killed on the N3 route during the whole of 2016.

Roux says motorists can play their part in helping improve road safety by:
* Ensuring tyres are in a good condition and capable of handling wet roads;
* Being patient on the road and reducing their speed;
* Increasing following distance;
* Keeping headlights on at all times;
* Avoid driving in the spray of trucks, as this reduces visibility.
The N3 Toll Concession says motorists need to take full responsibility for getting to their destinations safely.
