Baby X murder accused back in Durban court

The Chatsworth woman accused of murdering her 3-year-old daughter has appeared in the Durban High Court for the first time since her mother, and co-accused, died in prison.

The toddler was allegedly starved, tortured, sexually assaulted and tied to the bed of her Chatsworth home - sparking a public outcry.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the identities of Baby X's siblings, appeared in Court B this morning.

The court heard that the matter would be adjourned to mid-August so the merits of the case to could be argued.

The accused appeared stressed and concerned as she stood in the dock - alone for the first time.

She faces a string of charges, including multiple counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, child abuse, sexual assault, murder and rape.

Her co-accused, the child's grandmother, died in the cells at Westville Prison in April.

The woman's advocate, Murray Pitman had previously argued that his client does not have the required capacity to be held criminally responsible as a result of injuries sustained during a car crash.
