Acting Division Commander of the Pinetown Fire and Emergency Department, Craig Peters says the fire started this morning and gutted about 20 homes.

Peters says the firefighters found the victims' bodies in their homes after the blaze had been doused.

He says the crew made the grisly discovery when searching the area.

"When the fire was doused and the smoke cleared, we began dampening down hotspots and found the three bodies," said Peters.

Peters says the children were aged about 3-years and 6-months.

"It seemed as though they had been trying to escape. Their bodies were lying in close proximity to the door."
