Mother and 1-year-old daughter killed in Shallcross roof collapse

A woman and her 1-year-old daughter have been killed after the roof of their home, near Shellcross collapsed in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services say the woman, believed to be about 27-years-old, and the baby were both declared dead at the scene.

It is still unclear what caused the roof to come crashing down.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie says the mother and daughter were believed to have been the only people in the house at the time of the collapse.

"The house is understood be a formal dwelling with several bedrooms. The exact reason or cause of the roof collapse is still unknown at this stage," said Mckenzie.

He says medics were called to scene in the early hours of this morning, with rescue operations concluding at about 5am.

Police are at the scene investigating the cause of the collapse.
