Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu today released the audit results of the country’s municipalities for the last financial year.

Makwetu says 72 municipalities have recorded clean audits during the 2014/2015 financial year up from 54 the previous period.

He says, however over the last five years, irregular spending at municipal level has more than doubled to R14.75 billion.

The provinces with highest number of municipalities that obtained clean audits are the Western Cape with 73 %, followed by Gauteng at 33% and KZN at 30%.

Makwetu however says 94 municipalities - mainly from the North West, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and the Northern Cape have shown the worst spending patterns.

"When one looks at the Northern Cape specifically - we have seen that there have been some improvements in recent times however there's still a high percentage of disclaimed audits even in this region. In the North West, there's still a dominance of very negative audit outcomes in this province. And largely in Limpopo we are still experiencing stagnation or little improvement," he said.
