Parliament's health committee revealed that more of the potentially life-saving shots are on the way.

The country will on Friday receive 300 000 of the J&J shots.

Public health specialist Dr Kerrin Begg, says while it's positive news, the country needs to speed up its inoculation programme.

"Three-hundred-thousand is a lot less than it should be but never the less it is a significant boost.

"We may not see a decrease in the numbers of infections yet because we have only really vaccinated about one and a half percent of our population, but we do know that we should start seeing a reduction in infection in health care workers and also a reduction in admissions for severe disease amongst health care workers and those vaccinated."

There are now over a-hundred-thousand active Covid cases in the country and new hospital admissions rose over the past 24 hours - by almost 2 000.

Begg says the elderly remains a top priority.

"Generally, most of our admissions were made of the elderly and those with commodities and the more elderly we can get vaccinated as fast as possible the less chance there is of having severe infections that require admissions and ventilation."
