Hawks officials say the number of those killed in Friday's shootout increased to 19 after officers combing the scene discovered another body. Pathologists and detectives have been collecting evidence at what is believed to have been the group's safe house.

Police moved in after they were tipped off about a robbery.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says high-powered vehicles were also found at the scene.

"When we were combing the scene, we had various policing experts that found explosives and automatic rifles which are illegal in the country. So that gives us an indication that they were prepared and heavily armed to respond to this particular operation of theirs."

Mathe says investigations are underway to establish any connections between the suspects and CIT heists in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng:

"All we do know at this stage is that one of them is a Zimbabwean national. The house that the police have identified and where the suspects were found does belong to a Zimbabwean national. He and his wife were among the 18 suspects taken down during this operation."
