The former ANC Youth League secretary general died in hospital last month.

It's believed he had been preparing to expose corruption when he was ambushed. The Moerane Commission is probing political violence in KZN.

Yesterday, it heard from a man whose sister - an ANC councillor candidate in Ladysmith - was shot dead last year.

Fanyana Jele told the commission that his sister, Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi, served her Ward 20 with honesty and transparency.

According to Jele, shortly after moving there with her husband Ngobese-Sibisi became involved in the community.

He said she ran a soup kitchen and assisted burying loved ones from her own pocket.

The commission heard how she had not sought to benefit from her work. Her home did not have a geyser for hot water but she insisted that those living in an RDP community benefit first.

Jele says his sister's work caused the community to rally behind her - calling for her to be a councillor candidate - which she accepted.

Her popularity proved fatal. Ngobese-Sibisi was gunned down on Mandela Day last year.
