Moerane Commission: 'Councillors deliberately killed in front of family'
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A close friend of slain uMzimkhulu councillor, Sindiso Magaqa has told the Moerane Commission of Inquiry he believes prominent leaders are often murdered in full view of their loved ones and other community members to send a strong message.
Thabiso Zulu is testifying before the commission - which is probing the underlying causes of political violence in KZN.
"It's the same modus operandi - to wait for them to be near their homes or communities, shoot them, make their own kids fear that hour. When their dad was shot at 5pm, their ears will ring every day of their lives. They will make their mothers and wives want to think that they would rather leave their homes," he says.

Magaqa who was also the former ANC Youth League secretary general was ambushed - along with two other councillors - by gunmen who opened fire on their vehicle in July.
Magaqa died in hospital last month while the other two survived the attack.
