Bongani Mkongi says there is no telling what the man accused of killing Mangosuthu University of Technology student Zolile Khumalo will do if he is released on bail.

Mkongi attended Mzolo’s appearance before the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

As he was being led back to the cells after proceedings, Mzolo showed the court the middle finger.

“He is in the dock and he is showing us the middle finger,” the deputy minister said outside court, “He does not have any respect”.

Khumalo was shot dead in front of her roommate at her off-campus residence in the Durban CBD, earlier this month.

Mzolo allegedly entered the building with another student before gunning her down.

The pair had previously dated.

Khumalo’s deaths sparked outrage amongst her peers. MUT students have previously marched on the court in their numbers.

Mzolo yesterday indicated that he wanted to apply for bail, which the State has said it wuold strongy oppose.

The case is due back in court next month.

In the meantime, Mzolo will remain in custody.
