Mkhwanazi: Over 4 000 people killed in KZN in nine months
KwaZulu-Natal's police commissioner says while the rate of crime may be dropping, many communities are still under siege from criminals.
Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says 105 suspects were killed in 38 shootouts with officers over nine months while four police members lost their lives.
"In this figure that I am reporting, 4 278 people were killed in this province in nine months and only 105 criminals died. So, [it] means criminals are at war with the citizens."
Speaking on Monday at the police headquarters in Durban, Mkhwanazi added that while murder and rape remain a concern, it is the day-to-day crimes that make up most of the SAPS caseload.

More than 88 000 contact crime cases were reported between April and December last year-an increase of 3103 from the previous year.
" It is cases that you might take for granted where people assault each other, a common assault, which leads into a case being registered.
"You might argue it is not complicated to get them finalised in court, but the bottom line is they contribute to the number of cases that we record in this province and the country at large.
