Durban Metro Police say it appears a convoy of around 40 vehicles are travelling on the freeway and moving out of the city.

They've passed Richmond Road and are heading towards the Mariannhill Toll Plaza. Metro Police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad says the 'illegal convoy" has been restricted to two lanes now

"This morning, just after 8am the Metro police was called out. It appears that they are MK veterans who are travelling to Pietermaritzburg no permission or authority has been granted for this convoy of vehicles to travel."

Sewpersad says they believe the MK Vets are travelling at a snail pace and proceeding to the city to see the premier.

"The Public Order Police is with them and they have to initiate any action that needs to be taken."

The protest action was earlier at the EB Cloete Interchange - Spaghetti Junction - in Durban.

This motorist, who was travelling to work, says he was delayed earlier at Spaghetti Junction:

"We were stuck in traffic and all we can see at the end of it at Spaghetti Junction, that traffic was at a standstill. There were some guys protesting and when the traffic started moving up to Pavilion, the protesters were escorted in front and behind by the police."

Meanwhile, police have advised motorists to use other routes or delay their travel plans.
