MK party calls for IEC commissioner’s resignation

The uMkhonto weSizwe party says the Independent Electoral Commission's Janet Love should resign with immediate effect.

It's accused Love of being biased towards the African National Congress since the MK party announced it would be contesting the general elections.

Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela says Love is too vested in the outcomes of next month's polls and should not be trusted to oversee them.

"She made comments in January and pronounced that President Zuma would not be eligible to be a candidate on uMkhonto weSizwe's parliamentary list. Only to then oversee the same outcome and uphold an objection that then attempted to get president Zuma disqualified, which failed as per the order of the Electoral Court."

On Friday morning, the IEC lodged an urgent application with the Constitutional Court to appeal this week's Electoral Court order overturning a decision on Jacob Zuma's participation in the elections.

The commission had found the former president ineligible to stand as a candidate because he had been found guilty of contempt of court and given a 15-month prison sentence.

The IEC says it's seeking clarity from the ConCourt on the interpretation of Section 47 of the Constitution.

Nhlamulo says Love is behind the IEC's move.

"The same Constitutional Court under Judge Zondo, who sentenced president Zuma without a fair trial or an option of an appeal. Now, this is a constitutional crisis. The IEC is now a player in politics, and it is being used as a political weapon.

“They must tell us who they want to be president of this country, if they don't want President Zuma to be president of this country. Janet Love is a senior and the one who is behind this with Cyril Ramaphosa. Let us not forget, Janet Love is a former deployee in Parliament by the ANC."
