Mixed reaction to Oscar's release

Family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp feel Oscar Pistorius should have spent more time behind bars.

Pistorius was released from prison last night to spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

He was released from the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.

Tomorrow will be exactly one year since he was sentenced to at least five-years in prison for killing Steenkamp.

He claims he mistook her for an intruder in his home. He was convicted of culpable homicide.

One of the conditions of his early release is that he continues to have psychotherapy.

Steenkamp family friend Jenny Strydom has told Sky News she feels Pistorius will be enjoying a life of luxury.

''If you've got a job and that job is running, he's not in an office, he's training all day. So he could be out all day and running so it would be a lot easier than prison, if I can put it that way,'' she said.

Meanwhile, advocate Mannie Witz says house arrest if properly monitored and imposed is anything but a slap on the wrist.

''With the house arrest, there will also be other conditions that the Department of Correctional Services will impose upon him. He is not allowed to leave the premises. You're only allowed to leave for the purposes of work if you've got an employment and once a week for a religious service.

''But you can't go and socialise and obviously no alcohol, drugs, parties or going on holidays. It's actually a very severe sentence.

''If you are not there, and you don't have a valid reason, three strikes and they will then take you back to court on written notice. You will then be sentenced to the balance of your sentence in prison with no benefits,'' he said.

The family's lawyer Tania Koen says the family does not have any ill wishes towards Oscar.

"They don't want to avenge Reeva's death. Nothing will bring her back. They don't mean Oscar any harm however, they do feel justice that must be served," she said.
