President Cyril Ramaphosa this week unveiled several steps the country plans on taking to end load shedding, and transform the electricity sector.

The plan relies on power generation from the private sector.

The council's Allan Seccombe says the decision to abolish the 100MW licensing cap on private sector renewable energy projects will ensure greater participation from them.

"The Minerals Council's members have 5.1 megawatts, that's 5100 megawatts of energy projects its busy with. So these projects are from early stage studies all the way through to construction.

“Eskom says it needs between 4000 and 6000 megawatts of additional capacity to come online so they can do maintenance. The mining industry is able to assist with that almost by itself. We just talking about the mining industry, we not talking about the broader economy or other industrial players.

“The mining industry is able and ready to stand by and help.”
