The World Wide Fund for Nature says it's pleased to see renewable energy being given a bigger role in the strengthening of the country’s national grid.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a raft of new measures this week to end load shedding.

The WWF says it's been calling for renewable energy development, as one of the fastest and the cheapest ways of addressing our energy shortfall.

The group's also welcomed the nationwide rollout of rooftop solar PVs, which it says aligns well with the government's electricity plan.

It's however warned about potential flaws, like the waiver of regulations around the installation of energy infrastructure and the use of fossil gas infrastructure.

Meanwhile the Green Connections Liz McDaid says they’re glad the roadblocks to renewable energy are being cleared.

“We welcome President Ramaphosa's announcement that those issues are going to be addressed in an expedited form, there were other energy sources that were not climate-smart or good for the environment so we welcome the new IRP to see what modelling is used and what sort of energy plan comes forward from that.

“For now, we are happy and pleased to hear that there will be a bigger investment in renewable energy and existing renewable energy to be added to the grid.”
