Migration of winter birds poses threat of bird flu outbreak in KZN
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The South African Poultry Association says while there are so far no detected cases of avian flu in KZN, the annual winter bird migration poses a certain threat.
There's been an outbreak on a commercial farm in Ekurhuleni, east Johannesburg.
Authorities say at least 300 chickens have died there.

The farm is under quarantine.
The Poultry Association's Colin Steenhuisen says some birds are already on the move.
"The Yellow-billed Kites have already left the province and have started their migration and now we are experiencing wild water birds migration.
"That is the majority of the problem because those birds will overnight rest in the expansion of water be it farm dams or lakes on their way north. Then that is the cause for HPAI to spread," he adds.
