A local NGO says compared to a few other cities in the country - Durban's food basket price has ballooned in recent months.

A local NGO says compared to a few other cities in the country - Durban's food basket price has ballooned in recent months.
Durban is the highest when you compare it to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Springbok basket.
Durban has just gone way above the rest. When we look at the increase in the basket in the area over the past seven months, we see that it has increased by R277,89.

Mervyn Abrahams who is with the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group says Durban shoppers would have seen basic household food basket prices jump by 7.3-% The national average was 4.8%.
"As well as transport and electricity having high inflation rates than household income means that households have to cut back on essential services and goods."
Abrahams says the food basket has moved from R3 800,59 in September to R4 078,48 last month.
