Midmar dam levels reach 4-year high

Umgeni Water says recent rains have made it possible for the utility to pump water from Midmar dam into other catchments for distribution.

Spokesperson Shami Harichunder says the water level at Midmar dam is at a 4-year high at 99.01 percent.

But Albert Falls currently sits at a low 26 percent.

"All six dams in the system are dependent on each other, it is a completely integrated system. This means that when you look at levels of dams, you don't look at them individually, you look at the total amount of water in the entire system to decide whether there is adequate water," said Harichunder.

Over the weekend, photos of what looked like an overflowing Midmar dam were taken and shared on social media.

Harichunder says it is nothing to get too excited about.

"It is quite an awesome sight, because the dam hasn't overflowed in almost four years. From what I understand, it was the result of a strong gust of wind that blew some water over the top of the wall," he said.
