Mhlathuze Water CEO denied bail in fraud case

Mhlathuze Water's suspended CEO is to remain behind bars.

The Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has denied Mthokozisi Duze's request for bail in a R37 million fraud and corruption case. 

 

He appeared alongside co-accused Siphiwe Mabaso and Sthembelo Mhlanga, who were granted bail on Tuesday. 

 

Three others, including the director-general in the premier's office, Nonhlanhla Mkhize, were all released on bail last week.

The group's been charged in a matter involving a 2018 procurement project. 

 

Natasha Kara, who's with the NPA in KZN, says the case will continue in December. 

 

"The court fixed bail for Mabaso at R25 000 while Mhlanga's bail was fixed at R250 000. Duze was denied bail.   

 

“Their bail conditions are that they do not communicate or interfere with staff or board members of Mhlatuze Water. Also, they must inform the investigating officer should they wish to leave KZN or should they change their contact and residential details."

 

uMhlathuze Water has appointed Simo Lushaba as its interim chief executive.
