Merc-driving 'looter' granted R5 000 bail

A Durban man captured on camera allegedly making off with groceries from a Woolworths store in Essenwood has been granted R5 000 bail.

Mbuso Moloi handed himself over to police last week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
A video showing a man carrying a basket out of the shop and loading it into his luxury vehicle was widely shared during the unrest.

The store was being looted at the time.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KZN spokesperson Natasha Kara says Moloi is facing charges of public violence, theft, trespassing, and contravention of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2000.
"His bail conditions are that he surrender his passport and not to leave the province of KwaZulu-Natal without consulting with the investigating officer.

"The matter was postponed to 12 August 2021 for plea."
It's understood Moloi intends pleading guilty.
