According to KwaZulu-Natal Health, the provincial EMS received a call at around 3am to attend to a maternity case in Amatikwe.

The ambulance crew was met by a man - who then led them to dirt road.

The man then took out a gun and robbed the paramedics. Two crew members were shot as they tried to flee.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says a cellphone was taken.

"They both sustained injuries to the abdomen and hand and were taken to the hospital in a critical condition. Charges of attempted murder and robbery are being investigated by Inanda SAPS," Mbhele said.

Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu says the attack is barbaric.

"We believe this is one of the issues affecting the service delivery of the health services - particularly communities in rural areas and townships because once you start behaving in this fashion to the staff, it means everyone who works for the emergency services is now going to be under pressure and worried about their safety."

When there are calls of emergencies, they are never going to be sure of whether they should or shouldn't respond as they won't know whether it is a proper call or not," Simelane-Zulu said.
