MEC says reckless driving a societal issue
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthandeni Dlungwana, says reckless driving is a societal issue.
“All of us, we ought to ensure that we raise awareness. That is the reason why you will never see me - under any normal circumstances - using a blue light. Irrespective of the positions we occupy, all of us have to obey the rules of the road,” he says.
The MEC spoke about the issue yesterday, during a visit to the families of the three schoolgirls who were killed in Newlands East on Wednesday, when - it's alleged - a taxi driver jumped a red robot and smashed into them.
The MEC also visited the girls' school, Newlands East Secondary.
He says government's awareness campaigns are simply not hitting home for some,
"I think as government, we have done a lot of awareness programmes directed at taxi drivers and taxi operators but some of them are not adhering to the law".
