Mchunu steps in amid water woes in uThukela

uThukela district Mayor Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala says they are pleased with the government's interventions to address the water challenges that have been plaguing the municipality for years.

"We are very happy that we are going to have billions of rands that are going to be injected into uThukela to assist the community to get water."


Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu announced on Tuesday that he'll be intervening and taking over water and sanitation services in the district. 


Mchunu invoked Section 63 of the Water Services Act after meeting with local and provincial officials in Ladysmith on Monday.

 Shabalala says he's relieved, adding that he feels a weight has been lifted off his shoulders:


"All the water pipes that were reported to be dilapidated are now going to be fixed. We are now going to work with the Department of Water and Sanitation and we are going to have a committee chaired by the mayor and the minister."
