Major water project planned for rural Maphumulo

Residents of rural Maphumulo have been plagued by water challenges for years.
But now, the iLembe District Municipality says water projects for at least five wards are in the pipeline.
Mayor, Thobani Shandu, last week presented the draft Integrated Development Plan Budget for the 2024/2025 financial year.

He says R245 million of the proposed R1.5 billion budget will go towards increasing the capacity of the water treatment plant supplied by the Mvutshane Dam.
"Maphumulo needs 18 megalitres in order for it to be sufficient in terms of water provision. But we are working together with Umngeni (Umngeni-uThukela Water) to upgrade the plant of Mvutshane Dam to 9 megalitres to 12 megalitres.
"There's another huge project as well to deliver [another 6 megalitres] for Maphumulo [amounting]. [These are] some are medium to long-term goals; we will be putting some boreholes in some of the wards."
