Mchunu says Tongaat water shortages getting attention
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu has acknowledged the frustration of Tongaat residents who have gone nearly five months with an erratic water supply.

Supply in the area, north of Durban was interrupted in April when floods damaged the local water treatment works.
Mchunu, who’s been in office for a year, on Friday held a briefing on progress made in dealing with the country's mounting water issues.

"In KZN, we are dealing with issues of reviving the two aqueducts that were heavily damaged [in the April floods], while eThekwini are dealing with their main pipes to deliver, particularly in the south.
"The challenge remains in the north in Tongaat. I think all of us are aware of the anger of people in Tongaat. We are attending to that, there has been trucking of water there, but people are saying they want more tanked water."

Mchunu says they’ve strengthened mechanisms and partnerships to ensure better access to clean water and sanitation.
He says they’ve brought the private sector on board to help tackle the challenges and fast-track delivery.
