Mchunu outlines R120bn SAPS budget
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has detailed how his department will prioritise its new budget to focus on tackling crime in KZN and three other hotspot provinces.

On Friday morning, he tabled the department’s 2025/26 budget.
"It is clear that identified high crime zones in all four provinces require intelligence-led, targeted deployment of specialised units to combat criminality over and above Operation Shanela. A total of 225 hot sports police stations have been identified, demanding, targeted, and synchronised interventions."
In April, Mchunu flagged KZN, Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape for their high crime rates.
The SAPS has been allocated just over R 120 billion for the financial year.

Mchunu said they have been prioritised in the form of baseline budgets.
" This includes additional R85 million to support the top 30, plus five high contact crimes, crime stations. Community engagements will also be supported through an allocation of R28 million for community policing forums, which will be used to procure essential resources such as torches and reflective jackets."
Mchunu said a further R8.5 million will be allocated for community interaction activities, including imbizos, and awareness campaigns.
