Mbeki tears into govt - ‘No national plan to tackle unemployment, poverty’
Updated | By Natarah Nadesan
Former president Thabo Mbeki has fired a salvo at government
- saying South Africa's facing unsustainable levels of poverty and joblessness.

"You can't have so many people unemployed, so many people poor, faced with corrupt leadership, ANC people, one after another, are called corrupt. One day it's going to explode,” he warned.
Mbeki says one of his fears is that one of these days - we'll have our own version of the Arab Spring
“Remember what happened in Tunisia, it was a street vendor that got abused by the police and then got the country angry. There was a massive uprising that took place.

“The problems were brewing under the surface, they just needed a little spark. I'm saying one of my fears is that one of these days it's going to happen to us.”
He issued that warning at a memorial service in Joburg for ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte, who died from cancer at the weekend.
Mbeki also took a swipe at President Cyril Ramaphosa, saying there isn't a national plan to tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment.
"We do not have a great national plan to address these challenges, it doesn't exist. Comrade President Cyril Ramaphosa, when he delivered the State of Nation Address, he said in a 100 days it must be agreed that comprehensive social compact to address the matters.
“Nothing has happened.”
