He says the vehicles that contributed to most fatal crashes are minibus taxis, light vehicles and trucks.

Mbalula delivered the preliminary festive season fatalities stats on Wednesday.

"Statistics revealed that people who died on our roads this year were passengers at 35 percent, followed by pedestrians at 34 percent, driver at 26 percent and motorcyclists at one percent."

He expressed concern about the high number of crashes where multiple people die in a single incident.

"Most fatal crashes happen during the early hours of the morning and early evening.

"Most crashes occur between Friday and Sunday. Year-on-year, the number of fatalities has marginally declined by 3.1 percent from 848 in 2020 to 820 this year."
