He was updating the nation while delivering preliminary festive season road stats on Wednesday morning.

"We are seriously concerned about the high number of major crashed where five or more people perished in a single incident.

"We have seen a spike in crashes with multiple fatalities resulting in 17 such crashes so far this year compared to seven over the same period. The number of fatalities from major crashes also increased from 34 last year to 111."

Mbalula says statistics show that 5 provinces have recorded increases in road fatalities.

KZN is one of four provinces that have recorded a decrease in fatalities, according to preliminary road accident stats since the start of the festive season.

It's in comparison to the same period this time last year.

"The Eastern Cape recorded the highest decline of 30.7 percent on fatalities. Free State recorded an 8.3 percent decline in fatalities. Limpopo recorded 16.9 percent decrease in fatalities.

"KwaZulu-Natal record 24.3 percent decrease in fatalities from 173 in 2020 to 171 over the same period."
