Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
One hundred and sixty-two people lost their lives on the country's roads over the Easter period.
It's a significant drop from the year before when 235 people died in road crashes.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says all but two provinces, the Western Cape and Mpumalanga, recorded declines in the number of fatalities.
"KwaZulu-Natal, a 61.1% decline from 54 road deaths the previous year to 21 this year."

Mbalula says most crashes took place on Good Friday and Saturday.
"Our analysis shows that while the trend of fatalities the time of the day continues to show that most fatalities occur at night.
"A new phenomenon was noticed this Easter with fatalities showing a shpark spike in the early hours of the morning between 04:00 and 05:00am."
Fewer traffic fines were issued to speedsters over the period, with the number dropping by more than half from the previous year.
