Mayor's office confirms Gumede on leave of absence

eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede has vacated her office for a 30-day leave of absence.

The move is at the request of the ANC's Provincial Executive Committee.

Gumede's spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede has confirmed that her leave started this morning.

"We can confirm but the ANC will make an announcement tomorrow," Gumede said. 

Gumede was arrested on fraud and corruption related charges last month.

She was granted R50 000 bail, along with her co-accused, Councillor Mondli Mthembu and businessman Craig Ponnan.

The ANC's provincial leadership met with eThekwini officials to get a report on the accusations.

Provincial spokesperson, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu says they will give details of the outcomes of their PEC meeting and Lekgotla tomorrow.

"We have not issued any statement as the ANC because tomorrow, on the 11th, we are hosting a media briefing at 11am at the ANC provincial office. That is where all decisions will be communicated," Simelane-Zulu said.
