Massmart workers to embark on indefinite strike from Friday

The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) says its members at Massmart stores are going on an indefinite strike from Friday.

The union says they couldn't reach an agreement with the company over workers' grievances.
"The strike is as a result of a dispute, which centers around wages and working conditions,” says spokesperson Sithembele Tshwete.
“That is improvements of wages and working conditions for workers in this group as well as an end to unilateral change to terms and conditions of employment."
Massmart's Brian Leroni says they have not yet received a notice about the planned strike.
"They only have a strike certificate for restructuring. If they do want to strike because of our wage concerns or working condition concerns then that strike would be illegal.
"So the way we are viewing this at the moment is that there is a good possibility that they are going to embark on illegal strike action."
Massmart brands include Makro, Game, Builders Warehouse and Cambridge Food.
