Mashatile denies being present at VIP assault scene
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has confirmed he was in the convoy that included the group of VIP protection officers who were filmed beating up motorists on a highway in Johannesburg in July.

But Mashatile says he was nowhere near the scene assault.
"I want to confirm that indeed it is true that I was not there because the cars that carry the president and the deputy president don't stop, without even stopping at a red robot.
"So it would have been very strange if my car had stopped there, and I am busy watching while this is happening."

Mashatile told the National Council of Provinces on Thursday he only became aware of what had happened once he was home.
Eight officers handed themselves over to police following the assault.
Their charges include assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
