8 VIP officers to appear in court for motorists’ assault
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Eight officers from the police’s VIP protection
unit, who were arrested after a shocking video of assault was captured in
Johannesburg, are due to line up in court on Monday.
The now suspended bodyguards, who belong to Deputy President Paul Mashatile's security detail, handed themselves over to police in Sandton on Sunday.
They are accused of dragging and kicking three people on the N1 earlier this month.
Footage of the incident, taken by another motorist, was widely shared on social media.
Police watchdog Ipid says the group's also facing charges of malicious damage to property and pointing a firearm.
The victims were military trainees.
The DA’s Andrew Whitfield lodged a complaint with Ipid and says he’s happy they are finally in court.

"Blue light brigade bullies will finally be charged, they will need to face the full might of the law.
“The DA has maintained throughout this process that nobody is above the rule of law, not even our police officers, in fact, we expect our police officers to uphold the rule of law and to keep us safe."
