Masemola: 800 firearms recovered in four provinces
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Police chief Fannie Masemola says about 800 firearms have been recovered or confiscated in four provinces with the most reported shooting incidents.
KwaZulu-Natal is one of them.
The national police commissioner gave an update on Operation Shanela, which aims to maintain law, order and security.
He said their focus remains on permanently removing illegal firearms from the streets.
"Our focus, therefore, remains on permanently removing illegal firearms which enter the country through porous borders or, are stolen during house robberies or, are negligently left in vehicles by their legal owners."

Masemola says he's now heading off to witness the destruction of fifteen thousand firearms.
"This firearm destruction process is a measure that has been put in place by the management of the SAPS to ensure that firearms that are confiscated and recovered during operations are permanently removed from society."
Durban has recently seen several deadly shootings.
In Wentworth, a teenager, a pharmacist and a woman were killed in separate incidents last week.
Six people were also gunned down in Mariannhill last week Monday. The following day, a woman was killed on Edwin Swales Drive.
