Mariannridge residents plead for govt intervention amid spiralling crime rate
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Residents in Mariannridge, west of Durban, are urgently appealing to the local government to intervene following a spike in violent crimes that's left the community living in constant fear.
"We have had a number of incidents, including the killing of an 82-year-old pensioner, housebreaking, robberies of school children on their way or coming back from school. The situation is becoming more and more dangerous and uncomfortable," says community member Jenny Boyce.
Boyce says the situation's spiralling out of control.

"We are calling on the police and government to recognise that there is a problem that is happening in our community, and as residents, we have the right to feel safe and secure in our own environment."
She says they're going to discuss some solutions with stakeholders on Friday.
"We want to talk about our challenges around safety and security in the community. How we as the community, together with other stakeholders, can start to reclaim and create a safe space for our family."
