'It’s a battle’ - Gun violence terrorising Mariannridge residents

There has been another shooting in Mariannridge, west of Pinetown.

The community has been plagued by ongoing violence thought to be gang-related. 

 

Gunfire during an apparent hijacking on Wednesday evening, which left a person wounded, sent shockwaves through the community.

 

Newswatch spoke to some residents

 

"We are tired of the drugs in the Mariannridge area with the firearms also being used. The violence is getting out of hand, and we believe the police have been bought. That’s why there's no change in our place,” one resident told Newswatch.

"Our husbands and our kids are also now doing drugs. It's a battle." 

 

Another resident said she fears for the safety of her children.

 

"Due to the fact that these children will be traumatised, they would need extra intervention and counselling.

 

"This is an ongoing thing in our area, and as a person who is unemployed, I feel helpless. The justice system has to do its course. It needs to intervene with extreme measures. We need this in our area."  

Mariannhill SAPS are investigating a case of carjacking and attemted murder. The vechile was recover on Wrednesday night.
