A Durban man convicted of raping a teenage neighbour he was meant to be looking after will be locked up for a long time.

The 33-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Pinetown Regional Court this week.

NPA KZN spokesperson Natasha Kara says the man from Mariannhill raped the girl at her home over a four-year period.

She was 13 when the abuse started.

Kara says the young survivor's parents often left her in the man's care when they were working night shifts.

She says the accused was arrested shortly after the girl fell pregnant.

"Since he worked at a clinic, he arranged for the girl to terminate the pregnancy before her parents could find out.

"However the procedure did not go well and she became sick and was taken to hospital. It was then discovered that she had been pregnant. The girl told her mother that she was being raped by the man. He was subsequently arrested."
