The KZN police’s Jay Naicker, says detectives received information about a white bakkie that was spotted in there.

It’s been linked to several robberies in the greater Durban area.

Naicker says police tried to get the occupants to stop. A chase then ensued. " The suspects eventually lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a garage on Josiah Gumede Road.

Six suspects got out of the vehicle and engaged in a gun battle with the police officers and officials from a security company. One police officer was injured when he was struck on his arm and chest. He was transported to a local hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Naicker says three suspects were killed in the shootout. Another was injured and is being treated in hospital.

Officers found a two-way radio, four firearms and tools apparently used to commit robberies.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a former cleaner at Durban’s Bayview Police Station has begun a five-year prison sentence for theft.

Inderaj Bisoondaram and a police officer are said to have sold police uniforms, bulletproof vests, pepper sprays and ammunition stolen from the station.

The Durban Magistrate’s Court has sentenced the 54-year-old to a further 12 months for unlawful possession of ammunition.

The police officer is due in the same court next month.
